Blaming the Catholic Church is a good way to start but the argument that Irish people were led astray by the Church is pretty much the same argument as those who seek to divorce the Wehrmacht from complicity in SS atrocities. In both cases the answer is that they shared vital infrastructure with each other and ranking officials could have stopped the excesses, which they had full knowledge of, if they’d have disagreed with it.

I think it’s unfair to suggest that the UK Government doesn’t like you asking about African internment camps.

They also don’t like you asking about:

    • the conditions under which refugees are currently housed, give you a clue it kind of rhymes historically with internment camps
    • Various Indian famines that were caused or exacerbated by colonial rule
    • role in slave trade. Yes they ended the slave trade… by compensating slave owners. Also started the fucking thing.
    • That time we basically stole an entire island from its people to put an airbase there.
    • linked to the internment camps, pretty much anything Churchill did prior to the Second World War and after it also.
    • the undercover activities of the police investigating environmental groups e.g. having children by the people they were surveilling.

There’s probably several pages of this but I’ve only just woken up.

I was definitely critical of the graph and of IQ. It’s a flawed concept created by people who were at best blind to cultural differences and at worst outright racist. [I’m sorry if you found my messaging unclear]<— I’m being absolutely genuine here, I was trying to make a serious point and if you misunderstood it then perhaps I could have been clearer. In future with these kinds of posts I’ll label it as off topic at the beginning.

It’s also, there are several different axes that you could measure intelligence along, spatial intelligence and awareness, emotional intelligence and so on. Also intelligence is a sliding scale, there are definitely times of the day, week month and year when I am less able to solve problems and more likely to cause them and then you’re into the social aspects, it’s been demonstrated that people’s ability to think straight is affected by how precarious their existence is and so on.

I’m sure Lemmy wasn’t like this a month ago. What I was enjoying is that someone would make a post and then you could start a conversation that wasn’t strictly on topic just have an interesting talk about the general subject.

  • I live in the UK. My experience has been that the selection of beers isn’t that seasonal. Sure there will be guest beers in some pubs/chains but for example I can go to a Sam Smith’s pub and they have four stouts year round plus a pretty good porter. Just a lot of people don’t like to go to Sam Smith’s pubs because the owner has… feelings about one thing and another.

So if I’m meeting friends usually there’s something nearby that we’re planning to do and in a great number of pubs the choice is Guinness or nothing.

The problem with IPA’s is not that people enjoy them or that brewers brew them and pubs stock them. The problem is that there’s so many of them, all purporting to be slightly different, that it’s pushing out other kinds of beer. The amount of times I have walked into a pub and there’s somewhere between three and seven IPA’s and I ask if they’ve got any stouts and the answer is, “We’ve got Guinness.”

I’m going to need a reference on that staff abuse allegation, I’ve tried Googling but haven’t turned up anything.

I don’t have a tv so I didn’t catch the Squarespace commercial, don’t know if it even played in the UK.
