  • Well, I mean you’re right about all of that. But, if I’m wrong and I decide to engage you anyway. It’s not really about proving myself right. It really becomes more of a how much time can I eat, and how frustrating can I be.

See, you miss the point. Once I know I’m wrong and the other person is a dick. I’m not trying to be right anymore. It’s only about stealing your time. I am time rich. I have nothing but time. The longer I can keep someone on the hook with half cocked facts and almost getting it the better. I’m a house husband and it literally breaks the monotony of cleaning, and being a chauffeur.

This isn’t something I do all the time. Generally, I spend my time just sharing my old person wisdom. For that matter I haven’t had a problem since coming to Lemmy from Reddit. I’m sure it’s coming. But, people here seem generally more pleasant.

  • As I said to the other person.

Either way I learned something new. But if you’re a dick I’m not going to let you know that. At best I’m not going to “feed the trolls” and at worst I’m going to make you work for being a dick.

See it has less to do with being wrong. Hell, we’re all wrong sometimes. It has to do with how someone approaches me. All of us have some knowledge that someone else doesn’t. That’s ok. But that doesn’t make you or I special. Likewise, our lack of that particular knowledge doesn’t make us dumb either. So, why be a dick about it?

Also, if you can believe this. I get into quite a few religious debates. I know. It sounds crazy. In those discussions things aren’t always as cut and dry as say 2+2=4. People get really passionate about what amounts to nothing but interpretation and opinion.

  • I mean, I can live with myself. Plus, if you really stop to think about it. The purpose was served either way. I learned the correct thing. It’s not like I’m going to make that mistake again. Really the only difference is whether my opponent or whatever you want to call them gets the satisfaction of knowing that they taught me something.

With that being said. Maybe I should clarify. It’s ok to be passionate about something. But all of us are wrong from time to time. There’s no need to be a dick when someone has their facts mixed up. Is it any worse being a pain to someone being a dick over perceived greater intelligence?

But a better question is. Has that attitude served you well? I mean, you seem awfully invested in an internet strangers weird habit of being annoying.

It depends. If the person I’m having a discussion with is cool. I’ll admit defeat. If the person is being an ass hat. I’ll first see if I can bend the data a bit to squeeze in my point. If I can’t do that. I’ll look for fringe information. If that doesn’t work. I’ll just ghost them.

Also, if the person is a dick and “technically” right. I will tell you how technically wrong you are all day like Lemmy was my job. However, if you’re cool I’ll admit that we are both technically right, and part ways.

TLDR: it’s ok to be right. Just don’t be a dick about it.

  • Serious question about cultural appropriation. What is it? Like, I wear non la, or Asian conical hat when I go fishing. The reason is because I hike through thick brush to get to spots where nobody else goes. Those hats allow me to tip my head forward, and it pushes the brush to the side as I walk through without getting hung in the branches. It helps to keep parasites out of my hair.

It’s a superior design to a normal sun hat for what I do. Is that cultural appropriation? Or, is it only cultural appropriation if it’s disrespectful? But if it’s only when you’re being disrespectful. Then what about people that view just the very act of wearing or using something from a different culture as disrespectful?

  • In this house we are a beef and stroganoff family ONLY!!

With that being said. I may not condone your “sausage stroganoff”, but I figure that if you wanna stick your sausage in some stroganoff. Well, I’ll fight for your right to do so.

I just want to make it clear. I am no sausage stroganoff lover. But, I believe in your freedom to stroganoff any way that makes you happy.

  • I think it will improve, and I mean the truth is always more complicated. It is bad decisions, but it’s also bad circumstances. When they first got together she was a well paid nurse, and living in Oregon. They moved back here when she became disabled because it’s cheaper here.

But, that’s life ya know. As my father used to say “In life, you pays your money and you takes your chances.” I know he didn’t invent that saying, but he said it quite often when talking about how life doesn’t turn out the way you wanted.

  • So, that’s a complicated issue. She is like 60 and disabled. She has MS. He is like 34 and isn’t disabled, but is her husband and full time caregiver. They are married, and spend most of their time playing video games.

He met her playing on a game server I used to host a literal lifetime ago. They got married when he turned 18. Honestly the whole thing is kind of gross, and I don’t really like her much. But, he and I grew up in the same town and share some experiences, and are friends.

They got into a cheap house and have been living there. Recently she inherited some money and bought the trailer and land that he grew up on. They are in the process of moving into it. Which is closer to me.

I think their rent has been 850 a month and she gets like 1100 a month for disability. So that doesn’t leave much for bills.

Yeah it’s kind of rural, but also people don’t talk around here. I don’t know any of my neighbors names, and I live in an apartment. Also, save money was really a polite way of saying pay bills or eat. Like, even now they don’t use heat in the winter which isn’t a big deal. But they don’t use a/c in the summer. Which here is incredibly dangerous. In the summer the temp regularly gets above 100F and the average humidity is around 75%.

Now things are better. His dad drives down once a month and takes them food shopping, and buys them stuff. But that still means most of the month is no fresh fruits, or vegetables, or milk.

The scurvy thing was just something that happened due to poor diet. Like, sure, looking back it’s easy to say “I’m getting scurvy. I better eat some vitamin C.” But the reality was they didn’t realize that they had scurvy until it was serious enough to have symptoms. After all who thinks about scurvy in 2017.

So I live in the US. I have 2 friends that got scurvy in 2017. How did they get scurvy you might ask? Let me tell you. They live about 30 mins from the grocery store in a car. Which they don’t have. The closest person that can take them grocery shopping lives about 2 hours away. Plus they’re poor as shit.

To save money they spent 3 months eating nothing but homemade biscuits (scones for non Americans). The lack of vitamin c gave them scurvy.

They live on a fixed income. My state tightened requirements for food stamps. They were fucked.

I will say that the UN came to my state several years ago. They literally called it the 3rd world and said it was the most impoverished place in the developed world. So, there’s that.
